Horseracing and tote betting company Phumelela is proud to announce that transformation is galloping ahead within the company and that it has accomplished level 2 contributor status towards broad-based black economic empowerment two years earlier than regulations require.

“It’s a mammoth achievement that is not only good for the company, but for South Africa and sport in general,” said Phumelela Group CEO Rian du Plessis.

JOHANNESBURG - On 17 May the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund’s (HRADF) Board of Directors qualified 2PU, the consortium formed by PMU (Paris, France) and Phumelela Gaming and Leisure (Johannesburg, South Africa) for the purpose of participating in the tender procedure for the grant of the exclusive right to organise and conduct mutual or tote betting on horse races in Greece for a period of 20 years.

PMU and Phumelela Gaming and Leisure are working on a project that will benefit the whole Greek horseracing industry and allow a sustainable and profitable growth of the horse race betting market.

THANKS to the amazing generosity of many people, this year’s Phumelela Christmas Tree will benefit many more underprivileged children than previously.

Some 250 children from four homes, including St Laurence’s Children’s Haven which plays a key role in the event, were treated to a Christmas lunch at Turffontein on Saturday 8 December.

THE total amount available for prize money (the stakes pot) in Phumelela racing regions in the current 2012-13 racing season is R174 million – R10.5 million or 6.4% more than last season – and this will result in stakes increasing across the board from 1 January 2013.

Prize money is determined by a stakes formula agreed between horseracing and tote betting company Phumelela and The Racing Association (RA), which represents owners, and is derived from various sources.

THE contribution of TAB betting on sport, notably soccer, to the stakes pot for 2012-13 has increased to R13.1 million - R4.1 million or 45% more than in 2011-12.

There have also been significant increases in the contributions flowing from royalties from Gold Circle and international jurisdictions (up 26% to R18 million), Phumelela subsidiary Betting World (up 41%) and limited payout machines (up 35%). Phumelela’s Isle of Man tote operation contributed to prize money for the first time with R2.4 million being yielded from that source.
