“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” - Nelson Mandela 1918-2013

Phumelela’s Christmas Tree race meeting, which was scheduled for Tuesday evening, has been moved to Wednesday 11 December in deference to the memorial service for Nelson Mandela at FNB stadium in Soweto, where he last appeared in public at the 2010 World Cup final.

More than R250 million will be paid in prize money in Phumelela regions for the racing season 2013-14 (1 August 2013 to 31 July 2014) with R134 million or some 54% of that total allocated to races on the Highveld.

London – Andy Hornby, Chief Executive, Coral and Steve Harman, Chairman, British Horseracing Authority are the next top speakers to be announced for Leaders In Racing after the conference reached a total sell-out last week for its third annual event at Chelsea FC on the 8 October 2013. Phumelela’s CEO Rian du Plessis had already been confirmed as one of the speakers at the conference.

Prior to joining Coral, Hornby was Group Chief Executive of Alliance Boots and previously served as Group Chief Executive of Halifax Bank of Scotland. He was appointed Chief Executive of Coral in 2011 and took on the task of reviving the bookmaking arm of the gambling company.

Horseracing and tote betting company Phumelela is proud to announce that transformation is galloping ahead within the company and that it has accomplished level 2 contributor status towards broad-based black economic empowerment two years earlier than regulations require.

“It’s a mammoth achievement that is not only good for the company, but for South Africa and sport in general,” said Phumelela Group CEO Rian du Plessis.
