An article titled "Bookmakers - Villains or victims of bad publicity" published on 31 March contains numerous factual inaccuracies which need to be corrected.

When our new constitution was adopted in 1994, all forms of gambling and betting (other than the National Lottery) were delegated to the provinces. Phumelela is not aware of the "partnership" entered into between "government" and the "private sector" before 1994. In any event, post 1994 it would have needed to be between all nine provincial governments and the private sector for such a "partnership" to be valid. We challenge the author of the article and his or her sources to provide evidence of such a partnership agreement with all nine provinces.

Horseracing has added another gem to their Tiara as Phumelela announce that Mary Slack’s Wilgerbosdrift Stud have renewed their Triple Tiara sponsorship for another three years.

The Triple Tiara this year consisted of alternate first legs, the R1-million Grade 1 Avontuur Estate Cape Fillies Guineas at Kenilworth (won by Majmu) and the R500,000 Grade 2 Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas on the Turffontein Standside track (won by Siren’s Call) . The second leg was the Grade 1 R1-million Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic over 1800m (won by Siren’s Call) and the third leg will be the Grade 1 R1-million Wilgerbosdrift SA Oaks over 2450m. Isle Of Man-based Premier Gateway International Ltd (PGI) announced agreements at Icewith Optima and A BET A to provide wager path access for their retail customers. The deal will allow the sportsbetting and e-gaming developers to offer online wagers to its cross-platform suite through PGI into horseracing and sports betting pools from Australia, Singapore, South Africa and the USA. However, there was heightened expectation at Ice that these announcements are about to be dwarfed by another agreement between PGI and EEyaa (Gibraltar) limited.

At the Charity Mile race meeting at Turffontein on Saturday Phumelela Gaming and Leisure handed over a cheque for R1,520,000 for the various Horse Care units around the country.

In a press release, the racing operator said: “Phumelela recognises the dedication from the various Horse Care units around the country, providing essential healthcare and nutrition to horses in local communities.

On 9 October the Gauteng Gambling Board issued an interim order to the effect that Phumelela is required to make the Tellytrack channel available to all bookmakers at the 2013 price plus an inflation adjustment.

Phumelela has been advised that the order is irregular and incompetent, and stands to be set aside on review.
