Vee Moodley appointed Phumelela Betting Executive
PHUMELELA, the JSE-listed horseracing and tote betting company, is delighted to announce that Vee Moodley, currently CEO designate of the National Horseracing Authority, will take up the post of Betting Executive on 1 July.

"Vee has a strong financial background and an excellent knowledge of both horseracing and betting,’’ said Phumelela Group CEO Rian du Plessis. "I have no doubt that he will prove an asset to Phumelela and will contribute significantly to both the betting division and the executive team.’’

Moodley (41) studied for a B Com degree at the University of Natal before going on to study a Labour Relations course at the University of Natal. He first started working at Stewarts and Lloyds and studied cost and management accounting on a part-time basis before becoming a junior accountant at the PMC group of companies in Pinetown.

In 1997 he became the Group Accountant and in 2002 took an advanced part-time maths course at the University of Natal, where he obtained a distinction.

Moodley has been an avid horseracing fan since the age of 12 and in 2003 he successfully applied for a position on the National Horseracing Authority (NHA) handicapping panel.

His thorough knowledge and understanding of horseracing stood him in good stead in his new role and in 2007 he was promoted to the position of Racing Control Manager, the second-highest post at the NHA.

Moodley said: "I really enjoyed working at the NHA and am of the strong opinion that the knowledge and experience I have gained will help me deal successfully with the challenges of my new position.

"It’s an extremely important position because betting is the hub of horseracing, which could not exist without it. I pride myself on customer satisfaction and believe that my enthusiasm will enable me to deliver what TAB customers require.’’

The Phumelela betting division is currently being managed by Mike Rishworth, who will resume responsibility for Phumelela’s properties portfolio and ad hoc projects on 1 August after a one-month handover period to Moodley.
