Powered by Phumelela, the academy scouts shortlisted 160 players inviting them to train with the academy in the upcoming weeks before the final cuts will be done. Post registration, the first games kicked off at 07h30, with the last games drawing to a close at 19h45.
“On behalf of Phumelela, we are proud to be associated with the Supersport United Academy: The commitment and the passion of the coaches was unbelievable, they were professional throughout the trials and I take my hat off to them and their support staff,” says Jerry Warie: Soccer Coordinator – Phumelela Gaming. “Having to stand in the heat for 11 hours with a fine tooth comb looking for talent is not easy and I hope the coaches and team get rewarded by sourcing South Africa’s next best. Well done to everyone who was involved and good luck to all the boys who have been selected: Phumelela is behind you all the way.”
Head Selector & Top Talent Manager from Supersport United FC Godfrey Mosoetsa echo’s Jerry’s sentiments;
“We had a lot of interest in these trials from the players – roughly 1400-1600 players, of which about 600 were U19 players and 1000 players for the U17 age group. There was great interest and patience showed by players as the first game kicked off at 07:30 & last game started at 19:45 - under flood lights. There certainly was talent on display and now the selected players will join the Supersport Academy this week where final cuts will be done.”
The u17 age group saw approximately 100 players make the short list, and at u19 level 66 players. Due to the overwhelming response, the academy will in future years host one age category per trial. Trial dates for the u13 and u15 age groups will be announced shortly and interested players are requested to keep a close eye on the relevant social media platforms.
