“WHAT COUNTS IN LIFE IS NOT THE MERE FACT THAT WE HAVE LIVED. IT IS WHAT DIFFERENCE WE HAVE MADE TO THE LIVES OF OTHERS THAT WILL DETERMINE THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE LIFE WE LEAD.” - NELSON MANDELA 1918-2013

Phumelela’s Christmas Tree race meeting, which was scheduled for Tuesday evening, has been moved to Wednesday 11 December in deference to the memorial service for Nelson Mandela at FNB stadium in Soweto, where he last appeared in public at the 2010 World Cup final.

Many heads of state, including USA President Barack Obama, are among the 90,000 people expected to attend the memorial service.

All Phumelela race meetings before the official state funeral on Sunday will be dedicated to the former president and global icon. A moment’s silence in his honour will be observed at each meeting, flags will fly at half-mast and jockeys will wear black armbands.

Gold Circle has moved the Clairwood race meeting scheduled for this Sunday to Monday 16 December, when it will form a doubleheader with the fixture at Kenilworth in Cape Town.
